Two days allow you to discover the main districts of Osaka, between historic temples, gourmet markets, lively neighborhoods and urban panoramas. This itinerary combines the city’s iconic sites with some practical tips to fully enjoy each stage.
Day 1: Discover the heritage and atmosphere of Osaka
Start your stay with a visit to Shitenno-ji Temple, considered the oldest Buddhist temple officially founded in Japan. Established in the sixth century by Prince Shōtoku, it occupies an important place in the religious history of the country. Despite several reconstructions over the centuries, the complex retains its original plan.
Take the time to explore its vast spaces, admire its five-storey pagoda and its main pavilion. The small temple museum also provides a better understanding of its history and role in the development of Osaka. To enrich the tour, an audioguide is an excellent option.
At the end of the morning, join the Namba district, the lively heart of the city. Start by exploring the Kuromon Ichiba market, renowned for its fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables and local specialities. This market is ideal for tasting Osaka’s cuisine in an authentic atmosphere.
Then continue your walk to Dotonbori, probably the most famous area of the city. The giant bright signs, canals, restaurants and permanent animation make it one of Japan’s most iconic venues. It is also the perfect place to taste several local specialties such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki or kushikatsu. Don’t forget to photograph the famous sign Glico, which has become one of Osaka’s symbols.
In the evening, head for Shinsekai, a neighborhood that retains a retro atmosphere inspired by early 20th century Japan. Dominated by the Tsutenkaku tower, it offers a different atmosphere from Dotonbori, with its alleyways lined with small restaurants, playrooms and colourful signs.
Take the opportunity to climb to the top of the tower to admire the view of Osaka, then settle in one of the many restaurants specializing in kushikatsu. The settlements frequented by the inhabitants often offer a more authentic experience.
Day 2: between historic castle and contemporary architecture
Spend your second day at Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most famous monuments. Built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it played a major role in the unification of the country. Today it is restored and houses a museum depicting its history as well as the great battles that marked the era of the samurai.
The park surrounding the castle also deserves a walk. In the spring, thousands of cherry trees attract visitors who come to admire the sakura, while autumn offers beautiful colours. Even outside these seasons, the vast green spaces allow you to enjoy a pleasant break in the heart of the city.
In the afternoon, join Umeda, the main business district and one of the most important shopping centers in Osaka. Its modern architecture contrasts strongly with the historical sites visited in the morning.
Don’t miss the Umeda Sky Building, famous for its floating observatory with 360-degree panoramic views of the entire city. Shopping enthusiasts can then go through Grand Front Osaka, a vast complex of shops, restaurants, cafes and leisure areas.
If time permits, extend the day by joining America Mura. Located not far from Namba, this area is known for its young atmosphere, independent shops, trendy cafes, vintage shops and street art. It is an excellent alternative to discover a more contemporary Osaka face.
In just two days, this route allows you to discover the main faces of Osaka. Between historical heritage, local gastronomy, popular neighbourhoods and modern architecture, the city reveals a dynamic identity that makes it a must-see on a trip to Japan. Taking the time to stroll through its various neighborhoods, each visit reserves its lot of discoveries and experiences typically Japanese.
