JR Pass in Japan

The JR Pass, or Japan Rail Pass, is a transport package designed specifically for foreign travellers visiting Japan. It provides unlimited access to Japan Railways (JR) trains over a specified period of time: 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. This pass is particularly advantageous for those who plan to visit several cities, as it allows to borrow the famous Shinkansen (high speed trains), the regional JR lines, as well as some buses and ferries, such as the one linking Hiroshima to Miyajima. By choosing this Pass, travellers can explore Japan freely and without having to worry about buying individual tickets for each trip.

The acquisition is made before departure for Japan, although options are now available at some Japanese stations at a higher rate. Travellers must present their passports with a temporary tourist visa to exchange their voucher for the Pass in Japan. Available in standard version or Green Car (upper class), this package fits different budgets and comfort preferences. It requires advance planning: it is essential to check compatible routes and trains, as some Shinkansen, such as Nozomi and Mizuho, are not included.

To optimize its use, it is ideal for long or repeated trips. Travellers appreciate the simplicity it offers in a country where transport systems can be complex for non-initiated people. However, for travel limited to one region, other local passes may be more suitable. It embodies the practicality and efficiency of Japanese transport, while allowing you to discover various landscapes and experience an authentic rail travel experience.
