Travelling to Japan by train is not just about connecting two cities: it is often an experience in itself. On Kyushu Island, the ASO BOY! panoramic train takes you to the heart of the volcanic landscapes of Mount Aso in a fun and comfortable atmosphere, designed for families as well as for rail enthusiasts. The ASO BOY! is one of the “Design & Story” trains operated by JR Kyushu, known for its theme trains and its sense of detail. It runs on the Hōhi line between Kumamoto and Miyaji, at the gates of the famous Mount Aso.
His name plays on the words: “Aso” for the volcanic destination, and “Asobō” which means “play!” in Japanese. The ambiance on board perfectly reflects this joyful spirit, embodied by the mascot of the train, the black dog Kuro, omnipresent in the decoration.
The train usually makes two round trips a day, with schedules suitable for a one-day excursion from Kumamoto. All seats are reserved, guaranteeing comfort and tranquility.
A panoramic trip to the heart of the caldeira daso
The great strength of the ASO BOY! lies in its journey. The line crosses some of Kyushu’s most impressive landscapes: vast meadows of altitude, volcanic reliefs, covered rivers and open panoramas on the caldeira of Aso, one of the largest in the world.
From Kumamoto, the train progresses east towards Mount Aso. The passage through Tateno marks a spectacular transition to the heights. As Miyaji approaches, views of the pastures and volcanic peaks multiply.
Panoramic cars located at the ends of the train offer large windows facing forward or rearward, ideal for enjoying the full landscape. For lovers of railway photography or nature photography, it is a particularly photogenic journey, especially in spring and autumn.
Accommodation designed for families
The ASO BOY! is clearly designed to accommodate families with children, without excluding couples or individual travellers.
Car 3 offers family-friendly seating, a small coffee area and a children’s playground. This playful space allows young people to stretch their legs during the journey, a valuable asset for a comfortable trip.
Interior mixes light wood, playful touches and decorative elements inspired by Kuro. The atmosphere is warm, typical of the tourist trains of JR Kyushu, which rely on design and conviviality.
The train also has the JR-KYUSHU Free Wi-Fi service, which is convenient for viewing the route or sharing photos in real time.
Hours and operation
The ASO BOY! normally circulates twice a day in each direction between Kumamoto and Miyaji.
Until 13 March 2026, Kumamoto departs in the morning and early afternoon, with returns from Miyaj around noon and mid-afternoon. From 14 March 2026, certain schedules were slightly adjusted, particularly at intermediate stops such as Higo-Ozu or Tateno.
The journey takes about an hour and a half. It is therefore perfectly possible to leave in the morning from Kumamoto, explore the area of Aso in the afternoon, then return at the end of the day.
In case of suspension of service, other rolling stock may be used, with timetables that may be changed. It is advisable to check the dates of circulation during planning.
Booking tickets and practical tips
All seats on the ASO BOY! are subject to reservation. It is highly recommended to book in advance, especially during weekends, Japanese school holidays and autumn foliage season.
Passengers can use a JR Kyushu Rail Pass to cover the journey, while booking a specific seat on the train.
Bentō reservation service is available on board. Some local meals and sweets are only available upon advance booking. For a full experience, I recommend ordering a bentō highlighting the specialties of Kumamoto or d的Aso, to taste in front of volcanic landscapes.
Note that the train is completely non-smoking.
What to see around Mount Aso
Arriving in Miyaji or Aso opens the door to many discoveries.
The active crater of Mount Aso is the main attraction, accessible according to volcanic conditions. The vast meadows of Kusasenri offer stunning panoramas and possibilities for walking or riding.
The Aso-jinja shrine, one of Kyushu’s oldest, also deserves a visit to understand the spiritual importance of the volcano in local culture.
For a smooth organization, I recommend a local means of transport from the station, such as a bus or a rental car, to explore the area freely.
Integrate ASO BOY! into a route in Kyushu
The ASO BOY! fits perfectly into a circuit in Kyushu including Kumamoto, Mount Aso and possibly Beppu or Yufuin.
From Fukuoka, it is easy to reach Kumamoto in Shinkansen, then to follow the panoramic train to Aso. This combination allows to combine high speed and tourist train in the same day.
For train enthusiasts, JR Kyushu also offers other theme trains on the island, making it possible to compose an original railway route through Kyushu.
As a Japanese specialist travel planner, I often recommend spending at least one night in the Aso area to enjoy the sunrise or sunset on the volcanic plains, particularly spectacular moments.
Best time to travel aboard the ASO BOY!
The train runs all year round, but each season offers a different atmosphere.
In spring, the green hills contrast with the clear sky. In summer, the meadows are intense green. Autumn is spectacular with the warm colors of foliage. In winter, the landscapes can be more austere but create a peaceful atmosphere.
However, volcanic activity on Mount Aso should be checked, which may lead to restrictions on access to the crater.
Choosing the ASO BOY! is an immersive discovery of Mount Aso and the Kyushu countryside, at a pleasant pace and in a neat setting.
