On the southeast coast of Kyushu, the Nichinan line features a spectacular landscape where the Pacific Ocean meets mountains covered with cedars. On board the UMISACHI YAMASACHI train, the trip becomes an immersive experience in the nature and mythology of Miyazaki. This elegant and warm tourist train offers an ideal contemplative parenthesis to discover a still preserved region of Japan.
UMISACHI YAMASACHI: a resort train in the heart of Miyazaki
The UMISACHI YAMASACHI is a tourist train operated by JR Kyushu on the Nichinan line. It connects Miyazaki to Nango by following a cut-out coast and then crossing forested valleys.
Its name literally means “the richness of the sea, the richness of the mountain”, a direct reference to the contrasting landscapes observed from the wide windows. Miyazaki is often associated with Japan’s founding narratives, and the train is part of this unique atmosphere where lush nature and local traditions respond.
The interior and exterior design celebrates the wood of the dobi-sugi, a local cedar renowned for its quality. This choice gives the train an atmosphere of seaside lodge, warm and refined.
A panoramic route along the Nichinan line

The daily journey takes one round trip a day. Until 13 March 2026, the train mainly connects Minami-Miyazaki to Nango, with major stops such as Aoshima, Kitago and Obi. From 14 March 2026, schedules are adjusted and some stops are changing, including a passage through Miyazaki Airport in the direction of going.
The course begins near the ocean, especially on the Aoshima side, famous for its island surrounded by spectacular rock formations. The sea view is clear, especially in good weather. Gradually, the train leaves the coastline to sink inland, between forests and hilly reliefs.
In Obi, an ancient city of samurai, the atmosphere is still changing. Visitors can discover a well-preserved historical area, often called the “Little Kyoto of Kyushu” for its traditional charm.
Further south, Aburatsu and Nichinan offer an overview of maritime Japan, with their ports and typical coastal landscapes.
A woody and elegant atmosphere on board
The use of the obi-sugi cedar is the signature element of the train. The walls, seats and some exterior elements are dressed in this local wood, creating a soothing and natural atmosphere.
The wide bay windows allow you to fully appreciate the panorama. Some seats are oriented towards windows, favoring observation and photography. The train has reserved and non-reserved seats depending on the configuration, which gives passengers some flexibility.
The JR-KYUSHU Free Wi-Fi service is available on board, convenient to view your reservations or share your real-time experience.
Food and local specialities
Bentō service is available upon prior reservation. These meals highlight the regional products of Miyazaki, renowned for its beef, citrus and maritime specialities.
The reservation must be made before departure, as some bentō and sweets are not sold directly on board. It may happen that the travelling sale is not insured, even if the train is running.
I recommend planning the meal according to the chosen schedule, especially for the morning trip to Nango or the early afternoon trip to Miyazaki.
Schedules and booking of the trip
UMISACHI YAMASACHI makes one round trip a day. The departure from Miyazaki takes place in the morning, with an arrival in Nango in the late morning. The return to Miyazaki takes place in the early afternoon.
From 14 March 2026, the timetables changed slightly, with an earlier departure and a widening of stops in the direction of going, notably via Miyazaki Airport.
It is essential to check schedules at the time of planning, as they may be valid for a limited period of time.
The train is completely non-smoking.
What to discover along the way
The Miyazaki region is marked by a strong natural and spiritual identity.
In Aoshima, the Aoshima-jinja shrine stands in the heart of subtropical vegetation. Rock formations called “the devil’s boards” create a unique landscape.
In Obi, the streets bordered by white walls and the former Samurai residences plunge the visitor into feudal history.
In Nango, the proximity to the sea allows you to enjoy a relaxed harbour atmosphere, ideal for a lunch break based on seafood.
To optimize the visit, I recommend that at least one night in Miyazaki or in the Nichinan region, in order to combine panoramic train, cultural tours and seaside walks.
Integrating UMISACHI YAMASACHI into a circuit in Kyushu
Miyazaki is located on the east coast of Kyushu. From Fukuoka or Kumamoto, you can reach the city by express train or via the Shinkansen network combined with local lines.
The UMISACHI YAMASACHI is perfectly integrated into a nature-oriented itinerary, including for example Takachiho, Mount Kirishima or the southern coast of the island.
For train enthusiasts, it can be combined with other tourist trains operated by JR Kyushu, creating a thematic railway route across the island.
As a travel specialist in Japan, I recommend to reserve seats in advance, especially during periods of high influx such as spring and autumn, when the light particularly highlights maritime landscapes.
Best time to travel on the Nichinan line
Miyazaki enjoys a relatively mild climate all year round. Spring offers pleasant temperatures and bright vegetation. Summer enhances the sea, but can be warm and humid. The autumn offers a golden light ideal for coastal panoramas. Winter remains mildly compared to other parts of Japan.
The choice of season will therefore depend on your overall route to Kyushu and your climatic preferences.
The UMISACHI YAMASACHI is much more than just a train connecting Miyazaki to Nango. It offers an immersion in the coastal and mountainous landscapes of the Nichinan line, in a woody and soothing atmosphere. By integrating this journey with a circuit in Kyushu, you add a contemplative and refined dimension to your journey, ideal for discovering an authentic side of southern Japan.
