This thematic journey guides you through the emblematic places of his work and his life, in a city that pays a living tribute to one of his most notable visitors.

Who was Shōtarō Ishinomori?

Born in 1938 in Ishimori, today integrated into the city of Tōme in the prefecture of Miyagi, Ishinomori has long marked the history of Japanese manga and television. A collaborator of Tezuka Osamu in his early days, he quickly became a central figure in the manga of science fiction and tokusatsu, creating titles likeCyborg 009,Kamen Rider,RoboconorHotel.

His work is distinguished by the ability to merge futuristic narratives, social concerns and portraits of complex characters. Ishinomori had a strong connection with Ishinomaki, a city he frequented regularly during his youth, especially to go to the cinema. It is this attachment that explains the presence of several memorial sites in the city.

Ishinomaki: a city shaped by the manga

Ishinomaki, rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake, chose to enhance Manga culture in its urban planning and cultural projects. This orientation gave rise to a series of public spaces and museums dedicated to Ishinomori and its characters, especially along Manga Road, a real open-air urban route.

The manga route of Ishinomaki: key steps
