Reitaisai Matsuri is one of Japan’s most iconic Shinto festivals, celebrated each year in Kamakura in the imposing Tsurugaoka Hachimangū shrine. Taking place over three days, from September 14 to 16, it combines sacred rituals, solemn processions and spectacular demonstrations of horse archery, yabusame. This event attracts a wide audience who have attended ceremonies for more than eight centuries, while discovering the lively atmosphere of Japanese matsuri.

The Tsurugaoka Hachimangū shrine and its importance

Founded in 1063 and moved to its current location by shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo in the twelfth century, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is the most important shrine in Kamakura. Consecrated to the god Hachiman, protector of warriors, it has long been a major religious and political center. Its large stairs, tree-lined alley and colourful pavilions provide an ideal setting for a festival of such a large size.

The origins and meaning of Reitaisai

The Reitaisai is the great annual festival of the sanctuary, organized to honor the deities and strengthen the links between the community and the Kami Hachiman. Its roots date back to the Kamakura era, when Minamoto no Yoritomo introduced yabusema as a martial training and spiritual offering. Since then, this ritual, combined with other ceremonies, has been rhythmic every September in Kamakura.

The three days of the festival

September 14 marks the beginning of the festivities with a purification ceremony, sometimes carried out in the sea, followed by the Yoimiyasai, a vigil announcing the following days.
September 15, the central day, is dedicated to the Reitaisai, solemn ceremony of prayers and offerings. Kagura dances are performed in honor of deities and the Shinkosai procession transports Mikoshi through the streets, accompanied by songs and animations.
September 16 is dedicated to yabusame, the highlight of the festival. Archers dressed like the Samurai of the Kamakura era gallop on a track targeting three targets. This performance impresses with its precision, speed and the pleasure of costumes.

The ritual of yabusam

Yabusame is much more than a demonstration of address: it is an act of devotion. Three selected archers are among the best riders-archers in the country. They cross the runway at gallop, unchecking an arrow on each of the three targets. Each successful shot is seen as a favorable omen, and arrows can become protective amulets. The ritual is overseen by the Ogasawara family, heiress of a secular know-how in the art of archery.

The atmosphere and animations around the festival

During these three days, the sanctuary and its surroundings are transformed. Stands offer Japanese specialties, artisanal souvenirs, and children’s games. Taiko drum shows, martial arts demonstrations and tea ceremonies complete the program. The atmosphere combines contemplation and conviviality, providing an immersive experience for visitors.

Practical tips for attending the Reitaisai Matsuri

It is recommended to arrive early, especially on 16 September, in order to get a good place for yabusam. The best locations are along the track, starting in the morning.
For access, the JR Kamakura station (Yokosuka and Shonan-Shinjuku lines) is about a ten minute walk from the sanctuary.
Plan a outfit adapted to the wet heat of September and long standing expectations. If possible, combine the festival visit with other Kamakura sites such as the great Buddha of Kōtoku-in or Hase-dera temple.

Why include Reitaisai on a route in Japan

To attend the Reitaisai is to dive into the living history of feudal Japan while discovering the spirit of the shinto matsuri.
