JR Pass since October 2023

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a rail pass that can be cost-effective, allowing an unlimited number of trips on certain JR lines (train, bus, metro, ferry) for a period of one, two, or three weeks.
Two types of JR Pass are available. One covers journeys in second-class cars, while the other allows travel in first-class cars.
Reserved for foreign tourists, it must be purchased online before departure. The buyer will receive a voucher which will have to be exchanged in one of the JR offices once on site. The JR Pass can then be used in the same way as a conventional transport ticket.

The JR Pass is valid on almost all Japan Rail trains, including shinkansen, express, express, fast and local limited trains.

Since October 2023, it is now possible to access the shinkansens Nozomi and Mizuho for an additional fee.

Non-JR trains:

Some non-JR trains providing access to isolated JR lines are also covered by the JR Pass. However, holders of a JR Pass will be able to climb and descend free of charge only at stations offering a transfer to a JR line.

The JR Pass covers a small number of local buses operated by Japan Rail.
The following JR buses are covered by the JR Pass:

Not included in the JR Pass:

JR trains using non-JR tracks:
Some JR trains operate partly on tracks belonging to other railway companies. These sections are not covered by the JR Pass and will therefore remain paid for the holders of the JR Pass

Special compartments and bunks:
Special compartments and berths are not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Holders of the JR Pass will have to pay a supplement corresponding to the chosen option

Road buses:
Only some local buses are covered by the JR Pass

Useful information:

The JR Pass must be ordered online before departure. A voucher will be sent directly to the buyer’s home.
The voucher must be exchanged for the JR Pass by going to a JR office (airports or stations).
Passport will be requested to verify the identity and type of visa of the purchaser

The JR Pass must be used within three months of purchase

The JR Pass is personal and not transferable. It is reserved for foreign travellers with a tourist visa

The type and duration of the JR Pass cannot be changed after purchase

The period of validity of the JR Pass is based on calendar days (from midnight to midnight). The JR pass is activated from its first use. If it is used for the first time at 14H day 1, it will expire at midnight day 7, not 14H day 8

If the passenger is still on the train after midnight on the day of the expiry of JR Pass it will remain valid until the end of the journey

The price of the JR Pass 7 days having increased significantly, it is important tosimulate the price of its itineraryto be sure of the need to buy a JR Pass. For a short stay of less than 14 days, it will be much more interesting to go towardsregional pass. Some urban transports are also covered by the JR Pass, but do not justify the purchase of a JR Pass

The delivery to home of the voucher must be paid in addition, the shipment costs 1800¥ regardless of the package chosen.
