The city of Tsuyama is a fortified city that gives rise to an atmosphere that has earned it the name of Shokyoto (small Kyoto). The symbol of the city is Tsuyama Castle which was built 400 years ago, one of the three castles in Japan known to be built on a mountain or hill in the middle of a plain.
Joto street
Joto Street is the historic district of Tsuyama. During the Edo period, Tsuyama was an important step on the pilgrimage road to the shrine of Izumo. Joto Street was the place where pilgrims passed and stayed. The old houses were preserved so that today the visitors could have an idea of what the city was at its height as a fortified city.
Castle and park Kakuzan
Mori Tadamasa, the first lord of the Tsuyama clan, spent 12 years building this castle, which was completed in 1616. Although the buildings were completely destroyed after the ordinance of 1873 abolishing the castles, the largest watchtower of the castle, the “Bitchu yagura”, was rebuilt in 2005 with its tatami floor characteristic of the palaces. Also known as a place to admire cherry blossoms, Kakuzan Park, which includes the ruins of the castle, has been selected as one of the “100 best sites to observe cherry blossoms in Japan”.
Shurakuen
Many trees, shrubs and flowers are planted around the large pond, which is the central element of this garden. In summer, lilies invade the pond between the four small islands. Autumn brings reds and burning yellows when the leaves of the trees change color, and in winter snow covers the ground. In the spring, cherry trees embellish the park. This garden was used by the feudal lord of the area to entertain visiting dignitaries.
The buildings of the garden were restored identical to the original buildings built between 1655 and 1657.
Former Tsuyama locomotive depot
It bears witness to the legacy of the railways that supported Japanese industry in the city of Tsuyama. This locomotive depot is a steam locomotive depot that is built in the form of a fan around the railway hub to accommodate more locomotives. The JR Tsuyama station’s fan-shaped locomotive depot is the second largest in Japan.
Tsuyama wonder museum
The Tsuyama Wonder Museum is a museum of natural history that exhibits about 800 stuffed animals, including endangered species from around the world, and panoramas that reproduce natural scenes.
