Castle of Tatsuno

Tatsuno Castle is one of the few castles in Japan divided into two parts. The reason is that the castle that was built in 1499 on Mount Keirōsan was abandoned in 1658 when the lord of the castle Kyōgoku Takakazu was transferred to another province.

When Wakizaka Yasumasa took the direction of the castle in 1672, only the area at the foot of the mountain where the lord of Tatsuno Castle usually lived and his family was restored. The former castle abandoned in the mountain was restored in 1979. From Mount Keirosan you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

At the time of flowering, the Tatsuno cherry blossom festival begins, culminating in the parade of warriors or the dressed samurai patrolling from the castle of Tatsuno.

Shûentei

In this tea house you can enjoy a matcha tea accompanied by a traditional pastry for a low price. Note that tea is served only on weekends and never in January and August.

Every year, from late November to early December, you can enjoy a very picturesque walk and hike around Shūentei and the Momiji Valley at the foot of Mount Keirōsan. Following the path, you will also pass through the shrine of Tatsuno and some observation bridges. If your accommodation is nearby, you may also want to do a night exploration because the view with the illuminated maple leaves is just as beautiful as the dayscape.
