A volcanic island, lush and often ignored by classical circuits, Kyûshû deserves the full attention of curious travelers. Thanks to a wide variety of landscapes, regional cultures, renown and historical heritages, this island offers a rich playground to explore Japan differently. Here are ideas for tours, from 3 to 10 days, to discover the different facets of Kyûshû, depending on the regions, the themes and the means of transport.
Understanding Kyûshû: geography and access
Kyûshû is the third largest island in the Japanese archipelago, located southwest of Honshû. It comprises seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima. Each has its own geographical and cultural characteristics, which makes itineraries particularly varied.
Main access is via Fukuoka, thanks to its well-connected international airport and Shinkansen. To reach other parts of the island, express trains, local lines, bus lines or car rental are to be considered. The car remains recommended for rural or mountainous areas, where public transport is less frequent.

Kyûshû concentrates several volcanoes still active: Sakurajima (Kagoshima), Aso (Kumamoto), Unzen (Nagasaki), Kirishima (Kagoshima/Miyazaki). These areas are also rich in onsen and hiking trails.
Rural Japan and Spirituality
Takachiho (Miyazaki), Kunisaki (Oita) or Tara (Saga) offer mystical landscapes and a more contemplative atmosphere, far from the big cities. The Udo shrine in Miyazaki and the sacred mountains of Kunimigaoka are unique places to discover.
Preparing a circuit on Kyûshû asks to make choices: beaches, mountains, hot springs, crafts or contemporary history… It all depends on your desires. The ideal is to favour one or two zones at a time, and to accept sometimes long journey times. For flexibility lovers, renting a car opens up wider possibilities. Every Kyûshû prefecture has its own identity and deserves to be explored in depth.
