Matsuura – sea, history and local specialities

The town of Matsuura is located on the Kita-Matsuura Peninsula, the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Matsuura was an important road linking the Asian continent and Japan since ancient times.

Doya tanada

Doya Tanada is ranked among the top 100 terraced rice fields in Japan. Each year, during the rice planting period (end of April to early May), the view of about 400 rice fields filled with water and the sunset create a magical landscape that attracts many photographers across the country to this region. The sun sets on the ocean just beyond the terraces, creating a landscape tinted with gold and orange.

Doya tanada matsuri

During autumn (usually in September), this area is known for the Doya Tanada Fire Festival, where about 3000 lanterns are installed on the ridges between rice fields. At dusk, the light of the lanterns and the sunset create an unforgettable view.

Matsuura Umi no Furusatokan

This bus station is located halfway between Hirado (Nagasaki) and Fukuoka Prefecture on Route 204. Some of the freshest seafood in the region is sold. The city of Matsuura is home to the fish market, which carries the largest number of fish catches Aji (Japanese horse mackerel) and Saba (mackerel) in Japan and provides the various outlets of the area.
