If you have a lot of luggage or if you travel often during your stay, the problem of carrying luggage is often felt. The Japanese solved the problem through a baggage service, the Takkyubin or Ta-Q-Bin, managed by Yamato. It is the only service of its kind in the world, at least on this scale, and is used daily by the Japanese. After using this quality service with irreproachable punctuality, it is easy to understand why. The company supports your luggage or parcel, the book the next day wherever you want, all over Japan, 365 days a year. You will certainly see KuroNeko (Black Cat) vans on the street during your trip. Delivery on the same day is even possible for local deliveries

Small history

In Japanese, Takkyubin means “fast shipment/delivery at home”. The service was invented by Yamato during the 1973 oil crisis. The logistics company was founded in 1919 and initially dealt only with commercial deliveries. However, when the company noticed that the Japanese post did not deliver packages exceeding six kilograms, Yamato began service in January 1976 with the launch of the door-to-door takkyubin. Today, its network consists of 135,000 employees, 45,000 vehicles and 6,000 warehouses of all sizes. It completes Japan Post.

Send baggage

TA-Q-BIN offers a variety of services depending on the size of the parcel, the delivery destination, etc. In addition to regular packages, it is also possible to send refrigerated packages, as well as heavy packages to airports, hotels, golf courses, ski resorts and other tourist places.

To send your luggage, you must complete a form in Japanese. Don’t worry if you don’t speak the language, your hotel receptionist will give you one (often pre-filled), and fill it for you. If you rent private accommodation, ask the nearest konbini, where someone should be able to help you.

Form to be completed

This form can be obtained either directly in a Yamato agency or in a conbini.

Prices

The cost of transporting baggage depends on its volume and the distance between pick-up and delivery locations. There are six standard package formats accepted by Ta-Q-Bin (the size is the sum of the length, width and height):

60 cm and 2 kg

80 cm and 5 kg max.

100 cm and 10 kg max.

120 cm and 15 kg max.

140 cm and 20 kg max.

160 cm and 25 kg max.

The last category is usually the maximum volume allowed by airlines for your checked baggage, so there is a high chance that 160 cm is the dimension you will need.

For information, transport of such a suitcase from Tokyo to Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) costs 1,890 yen. Transportation between Hokkaido and Okinawa costs 4,520 yen. For a small suitcase (usually about 100 cm) delivered from Fukuoka to Hiroshima, the price is 1160 yen.

Note that KuroNeko offers a discount of 100 Yens in yen if you deposit the package yourself at a collection point.
