February in Japan: between snow, fire and spirituality
February, it’s Japan of felt silence and striking contrasts. Here’s why this month is so singular:
- The snowy landscapes: Shirakawa-gō, Zao, Ginzan Onsen or Mount Fuji under the snow.
- Fire festivals like theYamayakito Nara orHiwatariin the shrines.
- Winter illuminations: Nabana no Sato, Sapporo Snow Festival, or the illuminated gardens in Kenroku-en.
- D The spiritual atmosphere of the Setsubun (3 February): throwing beans, repelling demons and making room for renewal.
- And simple pleasures: smoking oden soup, crispy gyoza, and teas smoked in hidden cafes.
The trick of Evasions Rebelles: enjoy the onsen
Winter is the perfect season for Japanese baths. Some tips for a successful experience:
For the more adventurous: test a wild onsen in nature, after a walk on snowy paths.
Choose a ryokan with rotenburo (outdoor bath) to admire the snow from the warm water.
Do not forget the rule of complete cleaning before entering the bath: it is a ritual as much as a respect.
Our favourite areas: Kinosaki, Nyuto, Kusatsu, or the rustic baths of Tōhoku.
Also try the neighborhood sensō in Tokyo or Kyoto, often full of history and very affordable.
What to do in Japan in February?
February is a great opportunity to see a Japan out of time:
- Attend the Sapporo Snow Festival and its monumental ice sculptures.
- Join Setsubun in a temple: a popular atmosphere and unique rituals.
- Take a break in Kanazawa or Matsue, ideal cities to visit in winter.
- Try a night in a temple at Mount Kōya, for a relaxing retreat.
- Enjoy the calm of a Japan on standby… Just before the spring explosion.
And you, ready to discover Japan when everything seems frozen… But that everything is prepared in silence?
