Japan in May: Nature, Light and Breathing
It is probably one of the most enjoyable months of the year to explore Japan. This is why we love him:
The open air before the rainy season: canoeing, cycling, walking or forest baths (shinrin-yoku).
Golden Week: An animated period, provided you are well prepared.
Japanese gardens in full bloom, especially glycines, azaleas, peonies and iris.
Less well-known areas such as Tottori, Wakayama or Shikoku are best known.
The Golden Week
Golden Week (29 April to 5 May) attracts millions of Japanese on roads and trains. To avoid disappointment:
And why not… just travelafterGolden Week? Prices are falling, places are empty, and the weather is still ideal.
Book your domestic transport long in advance, especially shinkansen.
Prefer small towns or rural areas for more calm.
Buy your ekiben (station binto) before arriving on the docks.
What to do in Japan in May?
May is a month of openings: mountain paths become practical, shrines simmer, and nature explodes. Our suggestions at the moment:
- Visit Ashikaga Flower Park for its magical glycine tunnels.
- Walk in the Japanese Alps or on Kumano Kodo, freshly reopened.
- Explore historic villages like Shirakawa-gō or Tsumago under the May sun.
- Attend Aoi Matsuri in Kyoto or Sanja Matsuri in Tokyo.
- Spend a few days in a ryokan in the countryside, between walks, onsen and kaiseki meals.
And you, how about a Japan of May, between abundant nature and soothing slowness?
