Mars marks the true return of spring to Japan. The air softens, the days extend, and the first blooms announce that the country will wake up after winter. It is a month of balance, between calm and renaissance. In this newsletter, we share our inspirations of the moment, tips to enjoy the first sakura, a trick to avoid crowds, and our seasonal favourites.

Evasions Rebelles on spring thread

Mars is a pivotal month in our planning: between winter travelers still on the slopes and those who go hunting for the first flowers, we accompany very varied profiles.

This month, several road maps were finalized in Kyūshū, Kansai and the Japanese Alps. And like every year, we follow closely the flowering map to guide you to the right place, at the right time.

March, it’s also the month when the desire to leave is reborn… And it feels like you’re asking!

March in Japan: flowers, contrasts and soft light

It’s contrast month. It can snow in the Alps and bloom in Tokyo. Here are our tips to take advantage of:

  • The first sakura appeared in Kyūshū in early March: Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Nagasaki.
  • Plum trees (um) are still in full bloom in many areas.
  • Plan adaptable clothing: fresh morning, soft afternoon, cold evening.
  • On March 3rd, it’s Hinamatsuri (the party of dolls): visit museums or temples decorated on this occasion.
  • March is also the ideal time for neighbourhood cafes, seasonal pastries and shy sun walks.

The second half of March is a real good deal to see Japan differently:

And the lights of March offer soft shades, perfect for photo lovers.

Before the crowds of April, the tourist places are quieter, even in Kyoto or Tokyo.

Flights are often cheaper than during the sakura season.

You have more choices for accommodation, including ryokans in nature.

It’s an ideal time for a solo trip, a couple or a slow disconnect.

What to do in Japan in March?

Mars is a subtle period, conducive to quiet exploration and the awakening of the senses:

  • Walk in the Takachiho gorges or the still peaceful Kumano Kodo trails.
  • Explore the historic castles (Himeji, Matsumoto, Inuyama) without the spring crowd.
  • Go on the tracks of the early sakura in Kawazu, on the Izu peninsula.
  • Let yourself be surprised by the winter landscapes that fade away in the Japanese Alps.
  • Test the seasonal specialties: tempura of spring vegetables, wagashi with flowers, green tea new.

And you, tempted by the Japanese spring momentum before it became effervescent?
