Umijima Island is part of Kita-Nagato Kaigan’s quasi-national park, a protected area for its picturesque natural beauty. With about 40 kilometres of breathtaking coastline, its steep cliffs and monolithic rocks carved by the ocean that earned it the nickname of “Alpes de la Mer”, the island of Omijma is a great exhibition of art of nature.

The hiking trail extends over 1,900 metres, including two hiking trails.

Omijima Island Republic
The Republic of Omijima Island is a cultural and community centre built in the former school building of a local primary school. In a nostalgic atmosphere, each old classroom is used to display photo exhibitions, documents about local culture, an official reception room for dignitaries.
Kaii Higashiyama
The famous Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama used the wild waters of Omijima as a motif of a huge wall painting of the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, completed in 1968. The work entitled “Tide at Daybreak” is 3.8 metres high and 14.3 metres wide. For Higashiyama, it seems, the seas of Japan were perfectly represented in the waters of Omijima Island.
Hanami d’Omijima
1,000 cherry trees bloom along this point of observation of the sakura.
Every year, early April, nearly 1,000 trees roost the hillsides with the flowering of several cherry varieties.
This observation point is located within walking distance of the natural research trail of Omijima Island.
