Yagishiri Island is nestled off the small town of Haboro northwest of Hokkaido. Haboro is located in the picturesque Teshio mountain range and has served as a port since 1953. Mount Pisshiri, the highest mountain in the chain, offers a sublime view of the sea and the land.
Yashigiri Forest
Yagishiri Island is known for its dense forest. The island was once entirely covered with trees, but large parts of the forest were used for construction with the beginning of the Pacific herring trade in the late 18th century. A ban was put in place on cutting trees on the island in 1880 to prevent complete deforestation. Shortly thereafter, in 1886, two thirds of the Yagishiri forest was destroyed by fire. The island has been significantly reforested, with the Uguisu Valley in the centre of the island not affected by development or fire.
Sheep ranch
This ranch run by Hoshu Farm and located in the central part of Yagishiri Island has about 500 suffolk sheep for their meat, known as the Yagishiri salt pre, which is well known in Japan. The meadow is forbidden to the public, but visible from the sea road of Onko which allows walkers to enjoy the beautiful landscapes, and also to see the lighthouse of Yagishiri, whose construction was completed in 1913.
Getting to Yashigiri
The island is accessible by ferry from the city of Haboro (less than an hour). During the summer, 3 ferries pass every day, only 1 during the rest of the year.
