Tennoji district, once considered a degraded area of Osaka, is rapidly transformed into a dynamic urban centre. A few metro stops from Namba (Minami), it reinvents itself around new modern developments, while preserving elements of the past. With the emergence of the Abeno Harukas Tower and the revitalization of the former Shinsekai, Tennoji and Abeno neighbourhood, today are essential places to discover the fusion between history and modernity in the city of Osaka.

The emergence of Tennoji

Formerly considered a little retro and a little old, Tennoji has been able to reinvent himself over the years. Historically, the heart of this area was the Shinsekai district, a fun area of the time, dominated by the famous Tsutenkaku Tower. Today, although this retro aspect is still visible, the transformation of the neighbourhood is remarkable.

The construction of the Abeno Harukas Tower, a 300-metre-high skyscraper, was a major turning point for Tennoji. Today, this building is one of the city’s biggest attractions, hosting shops, offices, hotels and an art gallery. This change of direction allows Tennoji to position itself as a modern and practical crossroads, while remaining attached to its past.

Abeno Harukas Tower: A stunning view of Osaka

The main attraction of Tennoji is undoubtedly the Abeno Harukas Tower. From the height of 300 meters, this skyscraper holds the title of the highest building in Osaka. Its last three floors, floors 58, 59 and 60, form the Harukas 300 Observatory, offering spectacular views of the city. On clear days you can see Osaka Bay, Kobe City and even Wakayama.

In the evening, the view becomes even more impressive, with the city lights creating a magical atmosphere. The observatory is an excellent way to discover the city from another angle, and it is possible to see the evolution of Tennoji, from its historical districts to modern developments.

Shinsekai : Back to the past

Shinsekai is one of the most emblematic places in Tennoji. A former entertainment centre of the 1920s, Shinsekai has long been an obsolete place, where cheap shops, pachinko and restaurants were found at affordable prices. Although it has undergone some modernization, Shinsekai retains an outdated charm and a unique atmosphere. There are also traditional restaurants serving local specialities such as kushikatsu (panned brochettes) and typical izakayas.

Walking around this neighborhood is like taking a journey back in time, discovering an Osaka d The Tsutenkaku tower, which dominates Shinsekai, adds to the retro side of the area, and it is an excellent place for history or photography enthusiasts.

Tennoji-koen : An oasis of greenery

In the centre of Osaka, Tennoji-koen Park offers a beautiful green space, far from the bustle of the city. This park, a short walk from Tennoji Train Station, is a pleasant place to relax, take a walk or picnic. The park is large, with many shaded spaces and a large pond.

Within the park you can discover several interesting attractions, including the Tennoji Zoo and the city’s art museum. The park also houses the Shitenno-ji Buddhist Temple, one of Japan’s oldest temples, thus providing a special spiritual atmosphere.

Tennoji Zoo: A Family Space

Tennoji Zoo (Tennoji Dobutsuen) is a great place to visit, especially for families with children. Although not at the forefront of international standards, it offers a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, red pandas, penguins and rhinoceros. Visitors can observe these animals in a rather pleasant setting, while enjoying the shade of trees in the park.

The zoo has been able to preserve a certain simplicity, which gives it a particular charm. Moreover, its proximity to other attractions, such as Tennoji-koen Park and Shitenno-ji Temple, makes it an excellent choice for a full day.

Shitenno-ji: The cradle of Buddhism in Japan

Shitenno-ji Temple is one of the most important spiritual places in the city of Osaka. Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, this temple is the oldest in Japan, and it represents the introduction of Buddhism into the country. Although the buildings were rebuilt after World War II, the spiritual atmosphere of the place remains intact.

The temple consists of several buildings, including a main sanctuary, a pagoda and a garden. It is a place of calm and meditation, and it offers a striking contrast with the agitation of the surrounding city. The temple is located near Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka Metro Station, making it easily accessible.

Tennoji district, with its fusion of modernity and history, is an excellent example of Osaka’s evolution. Between the Abeno Harukas Tower, the authenticity of Shinsekai, the greenery of Tennoji-koen and the spirituality of the Shitenno-ji Temple, it offers a variety of discoveries to its visitors. Whether you’re a history lover, an architectural enthusiast or simply looking for a moment of relaxation, Tennoji will seduce you with its many facets, both traditional and contemporary.
