The prefecture of Saga is full of unique activities and destinations, such as a balloon festival, tories that seem to float on the water and rice fields on terraces. The prefecture can be divided into the Saga region, the prefectural capital, the Karatsu region on the coast, the Arita and Takeo regions, famous for Arita items, a type of Japanese porcelain, and the Tosu region, where there is a large shopping centre. Delicious food, including fresh seafood and wagyu beef, is also a must in Saga.
Yutoku Inari Shrine
The Yutoku Inari Shrine is located in the town of Kashima, south of the prefecture.
The sanctuary was built in honour of the kami Inari, divinity of cereals and trade.
The sanctuary was built on a hill overlooking the city and has been standing here since 1687. During your visit, make sure to take a look at the main hall, which is known for its 18-metre-long wooden beams, and go to the sanctuary walking along the hillside stairs through pretty tories. The current main building was rebuilt in 1957 and is distinguished by its bright, scarlet-coloured interior sanctuary. Its location surrounded by nature is magnificent all year round, with azaleas and glycines in April and cosmos in October.
Dongurimura de Saga
The village of Dongurimura “gland village” is an ideal place to visit if you are travelling with family to Saga.
Here you will find various attractions like zoo and a large number of music and dance shows that take place regularly.
In addition, a music festival is held here every year and you can eat at the on-site restaurant in the village.
Takeo onsen romon
Romon, which is beautifully coloured in vermilion and white, and Takeo Onsen Shinkan, where you can enjoy hot springs, exist for more than a hundred years. Romon is built in a traditional style of Japanese architecture without using nails. In 2005, Romon and Takeo Onsen Shinkan were named important cultural property of Japan.
The story of Takeo Onsen is told in one of the documents of ancient Japanese literature called “Hizen fudoki which mentions that there was a hot spring west of the city. This text was written about a thousand three hundred years ago.
Sanctuary of Ouo in Tara
The mystical tories immersed in the water mark the entrance to the shrine of Ouo. Its name contains the character for “fish”, it is a sanctuary where many pray for a big catch.
It is said that about three hundred years ago, a government official who had failed on a nearby island returned to land on the back of a fish and survived. The grievor, deeply moved, built the sanctuary and tories in the water as a result of this misadventure.
The appearance of the sanctuary changes according to the tides. When the tide rises, the bottom of the tories is immersed in the water, which is their nickname of “floating tories”. At low tide, visitors can see the entire structure of the tories. Close to Tara, where the shrine of Ouo is located, you can enjoy fresh seafood such as crabs and Takezaki oysters.
Yobuko Morning Market
There are many places in Yobuko where you can eat seafood, but Yobuko morning market is the perfect place. There you can find all kinds of fish and seafood dishes, strolling between the various stalls. The market is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (it is closed on 1 January).
Karatsu terrace rice groves
The terraced rice fields are rice fields arranged as steps. There are several terraced rice fields in Saga, two of which are famous for being particularly beautiful.
Hamanoura rice fields contain two hundred eighty-three rice fields of different sizes. They fill themselves with water in May, creating a peaceful and beautiful scene with the sun reflecting in the water in the evening. The terraced rice fields are considered a very romantic place.
The terraced rice fields of Oura contain a thousand rice fields, making it another great place to see. Hamanoura and Oura both have observation bridges where one can admire the fields. These terraces are easily accessible by car from Karatsu.
Porcelain Park of Arita
Arita Porcelain Park is an installation where one can admire, buy and even manufacture Arita objects, a traditional Saga craft. The impressive exterior of the park looks almost like a palace.
Inside this building, inspired by the Zwinger Palace in Germany, exhibits the works of Arita. In addition to the exhibition hall, there are also many other facilities, including a shop selling Arita items, a workshop where you can make ceramics yourself and a multi-chambers oven fifty-five meters long. This is a facility where you can experience an authentic experience of everything about Arita items.
A sake brewery run by the same company that runs the park is right next door. Visits to the sake brewery (on reservation only) and free Japanese sake tastings are organized in the park’s souvenir shop.
Surrounded by the prefectures of Fukuoka to the east and Nagasaki to the west, the prefecture of Saga to the northwest of the island of SagaKyushuhas many assets. Its geographical position allows it to enjoy both the riches of the mountain and the pleasures of the sea.
