Asaka History Museum: Understanding Local Identity
The Asaka History Museum traces the modern history of the region, especially the development of Koriyama in the Meiji era. It highlights the impact of agricultural colonization in the region, known as Asaka Kaihatsu. Located in an old Western-style wooden school, the museum offers everyday objects, archives, clothes, agricultural tools and old maps. The tour provides a better understanding of how Koriyama became a regional economic centre from the 19th century onwards.
The caves of Abukumado: a fascinating underground world
Located in the Takine region, Abukumado Caves are one of the natural gems close to Koriyama. It is a limestone complex extending over more than 600 metres, discovered in the mid-20th century. In spring, Koriyama celebrates the season of cherry blossoms with several emblematic places. Kaiseizan and Gohyakubuchi Park attract Hanami enthusiasts, while more peaceful sites such as the Benishidare Jizo or the Sasahara and Fujita rivers offer a more intimate atmosphere. These places offer an immersion in nature and are easily accessible from the city centre.
This spring renewal also coincides with the first organised hikes of the year. Mount Utsumine, an ancient natural fortress, becomes a meeting place between hikers for a ritual ascent. The Children’s Festival, organized in early May at Kaiseizan Park, completes this period with activities dedicated to families, such as miniature trains or traditional games.
Summer in Koriyama: lakes, legends and fireworks
Koriyama’s summer events are organized around water points and local legends. The Lake Festival, in July, takes place on Lake Inawashiro, with fireworks reflected on the water, boat rides and shows. Kaiseizan Park also hosts a great beer festival, in a musical atmosphere with German accents.
The Uneme Festival, emblematic of the city, is held in early August with more than 6,000 dancers on the streets near the train station. He pays tribute to the legend of Uneme, a local figure. The month of August also enriched Hagihime Matsuri in the Bandai Atami spa, where lanterns illuminate the streets and pay tribute to Hagihime’s legend.
Other events such as Fukuyama fireworks or the Asakano Summer Festival offer day games and night shows. The summer festivals are thus rhythmic by heat, music, light and constant proximity to the natural elements of the region.
Autumn colours and peasant traditions
Autumn in Koriyama is synonymous with living heritage. Yanagihashi’s kabuki, played outdoors in an agricultural village, is a popular custom inherited from the Edo era. This country theatre, which is staged every September, shows a strong local attachment to rural arts. Autumn celebrations continue in several shrines until early November, notably in Asaka Kunitsuko, with processions and Mikoshi competitions.
More festive events, such as the Karakasa Andon Firework, are also taking place in the surrounding villages. This fireworks hanging from a large umbrella recalls the prayers for rain in the 19th century. In October, the city also organizes an agricultural festival and a gathering around local specialities at the general gymnasium in Koriyama, where seasonal products and culinary crafts are presented.
The Ishimushiro Ranch Festival offers family activities in a rural environment: tractor rides, pumpkin contests, and free access to all facilities.
Winter in Koriyama: lighting, swans and gourmet festivities
Winter transforms Koriyama into a bright and peaceful city. The Big Tree Pageant Fiesta dresses the trees around the station with bright decorations, creating a magical night trip. In spas such as Bandai Atami, winter festivals such as the Tsururinko invite you to discover hot specialities in a friendly setting after ice games.
Another winter attraction is the observation of migratory swans on the shores of Lake Inawashiro and near the Abukuma River. These places become gathering points for lovers of birds or quiet landscapes.
The end of the year is also marked by traditional rituals. The Asaka Kunitsuko Shrine organizes every 28 December the making of a giant kagami-mochi, a symbolic rice cake of over 90 kg. New Year’s festivities continue in January with visits to the Nyohoji Temple during the Nanoka-Do, where visitors seek luck and happiness.
Finally, the Winter Festa in February celebrates the local sake: the hotels of the city become places of tasting, combining new alcohols and gastronomy based on regional products.
