Obanazawais a town in the prefecture of Yamagata, in the north of Honshū Island. It is one of the three most snowy cities in Japan. Famous for its spas, its delicious beef and its beautiful natural landscapes, stop to relax and play in the snow.
Ginzan onsen
The city is home to ryokans bordering on each side of the Ginzan River, and the place is nostalgic when it is lit at night by gas streetlights. The view reminds visitors of scenes from Hayao Miyazaki’s famous film “Spirited Away”. The city served for the shooting of the television series “Oshin” (NHK) a monumental success of 1983. The night view of the city covered with snow under the lights is particularly photogenic.
Ruins of Nobesawa Castle
Nobesawa Castle is built on Oshiroyama Mountain (about 100 metres) 4 kilometres southwest of the present city centre of Obanazawa.
Today, there are no buildings left on the castle site, but three doors have been transferred to neighbouring temples. In the central area, an old cedar from Japan over 1,000 years of age remains.
Lake Tokura
Tokura artificial lake guarantees a stable water source essential for rice cultivation.

The lakeside cherry tree Yoshino is in full bloom from late April to early May, and the azaleas illuminate the shores of Lake Lavande in summer from mid-May to early June. In winter, it is an observation site of swans and ducks.
Historical house Basho Seifu
Matsuo Basho, the famous Haiku poet of the Edo period, visited the city of Obanazawa on his journey through north-east Japan (Oku no Hosomichi, The narrow road to the deep north) and spent ten nights there with Suzuki Seifu, nicknamed the millionaire with Carthams, a rich merchant and a master haiku. At the Basho Seifu Museum, you can discover their meeting in Obanazawa, the Haiku poems of Basho and the history of the city. The museum building is a late Edo house, which was renovated and moved next to the former Seifu residence.
Obanazawa, a station on the Ushu motorway, flourished as a safflower distribution centre because it is adjacent to Oishida, a key point of the Mogami River.
Michinokufudokinooka
The Michinoku Fudoki no Oka Museum exploses current documents and objects from the Jomon and Yaoi periods, which trace the origins and culture of the region.
Obanazawa Hanagasa matsuri
Hanagasa would come from the five schools of Uemachi, Terauchi, Akudo, Harada and Nakisawa. The festival takes place annually on August 27 and 28, with traditional tank parades (Mikoshi) and the great Hanagasa dance parade. During this dance, about 3,000 dancers perform a typical traditional dance.
Obanazawa Beef
Cattle farming started at the Meiji time. Nobesawa District was a major producer of high quality calves called nobesawa beef. Today, you can enjoy this meat in many restaurants in the city or in the ryokans of Ginzan Onsen.
