Mount Ibuki’s hiking season begins in spring and ends in summer. Many hikers and tourists visit Mount Ibuki for the good weather, the magnificent view of Lake Biwa and the Alpine flora.
To access Mount Ibuki, there are two main methods. The first is to take the hiking path from the town of Ueno Maibara, Shiga prefecture, which lasts about 3 hours to go. Or you can take the Ibukiyama Driveway toll road from Sekigahara-cho, Gifu prefecture, and reach the 9th station. At the 9th station is the Sky Terrace Ibukiyama, where you can buy souvenirs before climbing to the top. The shop offers many local specialities, including Ibuki Hyakka Mitsu, a flower-based honey that only blooms between May and July on Mount Ibuki, which has a unique flavour.

Ohara Kannonji Maibara Temple
It is a collection of Buddhist temples including an ancient temple of the Tendai sect. You can admire many cultural objects such as the statue of the missionary master (Kunishigebun), which would be the oldest in Japan.
It is believed that the temple of Ohara Kannon-ji temple was founded in Heian times, but the main prayer hall was rebuilt in 1715, the bell tower and the main door also remain and all are now designated important national cultural property.
Legend has it that Toyotomi Hideyoshi came to this temple completely thirsty, and a young boy, Ishida Mitsunari, would have served him three teas, undisturbed Hideyoshi made the young boy his servant. The well from which Mitsunari drew water to prepare tea is still present.
From Maibara, take the train to Nagahama station, then take the local bus to Kannon-ji Mae stop, which is in front of the temple entrance.

Getting to Maibara
