Most of the original branches of Japan’s most famous and opulent department stores are here. Stuck between them, you will find boutiques representing all the major Japanese and international luxury brands as well as chic restaurants, cafes and luxury bars.

Chuo-dori Street

Chuo-dori, meaning “central street”, is the main shopping avenue of Ginza. It extends from east to west, crossing Harumi-dori where you will find the department stores Wako and Mitsukoshi.

This shopping street is especially for visitors looking for luxury products but many shops are also for smaller budgets.

The old-fashioned Kimuraya Pan bakery, opposite Mitsukoshi, sells some of the best pastries in the city. The department stores Mitsukoshi and Matsuya are also worth visiting, if only to admire their superb and vast food halls. On the weekend, Chuo-dori Street is closed to car traffic, turning into a pedestrian area with umbrellas and chairs.

Harumi-dori Street

Harumi-dori is the other great shopping avenue of Ginza. It departs from the famous Sukiyabashi intersection towards Tsukiji, crossing Chuo-dori halfway. The designer brands are very present in this street, Hermès even has a contemporary art museum on the top floor of its 15-storey building.

Harumi-dori Street is also home to the main branch of the Sembikiya fruit supplier, famous for its expensive fruits but perfect appearance. Enter to admire them in season you can see square pastries.

Another walk along Harumi-dori Street towards Tsukiji will take you to Kabukiza Theatre, one of the main places to watch a kabuki play.

Kabukiza

Kabukiza is Tokyo’s main link for kabuki performances. The building alone is of interest, but the interior can only be visited with a ticket to attend a performance. Tickets are quite expensive, but it is possible to take one ticket for one act, which usually costs 1000 yen and audioguides in English are available (include an extra charge). Thanks to this type of ticket, visitors can discover kabuki in excellent conditions and at reasonable prices.
