Tokyo Station

For many travellers, Tokyo Station will be their entry point to Tokyo and their first experience of a Japanese city. Once you leave the tentacular maze of the station, you will be pleasantly surprised to see that the surrounding area is attractive. The area between the north side of the station and the imperial palace is known as Marunouchi.

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum

Located in a reconstruction of the original Western-style office building of 1894, the museum has a permanent collection of Toulouse-Lautrec paintings. But the emphasis is on the superb temporary exhibitions held throughout the year, mainly focused on traditional Western art, but with occasional excellent Japanese art exhibitions.

Idemitsu Museum of Arts

Hidden on the 9th floor of an office building on the southern limit of Marunouchi, this beautiful small museum has a collection centered on Japanese paintings and ceramics from East Asia. The museum has a pleasant rest area with free tea that offers stunning views of the imperial palace where you can relax after visiting the exhibitions. The exhibitions present pieces from the collection of 15,000 works of art amassed by the oil magnate Sazo Idemitsu in rotation.

Like many large railway stations in Japan, Tokyo Station is a real village, with many restaurants and shops.

Tokyo International Forum Building

Designed by the architect Rafael Viñoly and completed in 1996, the complex has the shape of an elongated ship, with beautifully curved steel arches and remarkable use of glass. This surrealist vision is worth a detour during a ballad around Ginza.
