Suganuma Village

The village of Suganuma is located in Gokayama, town of Nanto, Toyama Prefecture. In total, there are about 40 small villages in Gokayama, including Suganuma. In 1995, the village of Suganuma, as well as the village of Ainokura and the village of Ogimachi, were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These villages are located along the Sho River and flanked by mountains.

The village of Suganuma houses 9 gassho-zukuri. These traditional farms have been preserved and transformed into restaurants, cafes and museums. Here you can learn a lot about the history and traditions of the village, and about life in a mountain village.

House of the saltpeter

At the time of Edo, the production of saltpeter, an ingredient used for the manufacture of gunpowder, was a major industry for Gokayama, and almost all households were involved in production. The Salpetre Museum presents exhibitions relating to the production of saltpetre. Unfortunately, the museum has little information in English.

Two old houses welcome this museum. The first pavilion presents documents and objects that evoke the traditions and life of the former inhabitants. The second flag presents documents and objects on papermaking.

Neither is there much information in English, but the museum will be able to provide you with an information package in English. The ticket costs 300 yen, it includes visiting the salpetre’s house.

To Suganuma

Get on board the bus to Gokayama from Johana station on the JR Johana line. Get off at the Suganuma bus stop. A one-way drive from Johana station to the village of Suganuma takes about 40 minutes and costs 1,100 ¥.
