The city of Maniwa, located in the northern part of the prefecture ofOkayama, is the ideal place for all dairy enthusiasts. Ice cream and cheese made from Jersey cow’s milk are a must, especially if you plan to go to the Hiruzen Highlands. The city is also known as one of the best places to stay during the flowering cherry season. Sites such as the cherry tunnel and a gigantic millennial cherry tree at the top of a hill are the places not to be missed.
Preserved streets of Katsuyama
Many streets of the city of Maniwa are preserved such as the Edo period (1600-1868) and allow visitors to dive into an authentic Japan by strolling along shops, sake breweries, cafes and galleries bordering the streets.
Kanba Falls
Kanba Falls, with its 20-metre-wide waterfall falling from a 110-metre cliff, are the largest waterfalls in western Japan. The waterfall and surrounding nature have earned this natural site to be ranked among the 100 most beautiful landscapes in Japan.
Along the promenade are some other smaller waterfalls. One of them is the magnificent fall of Tamatare, which owes its name to the noise of the drops that recalls the rain on a roof.
If you’re lucky, you may be able to see a group of monkeys on your way to Kanba Falls. They are wild animals, be careful not to disturb them.
Devil’s cave
The entrance to the cave looks like a crack on the cliff. The lighting of the cave is done by means of motion detectors, so you will have to enter the cave to trigger the light during the 20 minutes that the visit takes.
Access to the cave is not easy, it will first have to climb stairs in poor condition, then climb a slippery rocky area (a chain is installed here). The path can therefore be tiring and difficult for the less confirmed walkers.
Daigo sakura
Daigo-Sakura is a 1,000-year-old cherry tree, isolated on a hill. Cherry trees are said to have an average lifespan of about 400 to 500 years. The Daigo-Sakura has lived twice as long and always blooms beautifully every spring. It was therefore designated as one of the natural monuments of Okayama Prefecture in 1972.
Bicchu Kanachi Cave
According to historical records, the Bicchū Kanachi Cave is the first limestone cave discovered in Japan. This magnificent cave has amazing forms of stalactites. The best time to visit the cave goes from late June to early July to observe the fireflies that live there.
Getting to Maniwa
Maniwa is accessible by train from Okama (about 3 hours) with a transfer to Tsuyama station.
