Goshogawara in the Tohoku region is a historic city full of sights such as Tachineputa matsuri and folk arts.

Tachineputa matsuri

This festival takes place every month from August 3 to 8. During this period, the parades of Tachineputa, decorated tanks that are more than 20m high, follow each other, accompanied by folk musicians.

Tachineputa-no-Yakata (Tachineputa Museum)

In Tachineputa-no-Yakata, huge tachinaputa (parade tanks) of 23 meters high are exposed. Visitors can see them from all angles thanks to a spiral slope around. In the exhibition room, large-screen visual presentations and sound effects will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the festival atmosphere.

Visitors can also see neputa designers at work in the workshop or participate (free of charge) in the creation of tachinputa. There is also a tourist activity (paying) for creating a redfish neputa or a fan with a unique design. Visitors can enjoy local cuisine at the observatory restaurant with views of the Tsugaru plain and the Hakkoda mountains.

The combined ticket costs 850 yen. For the various workshops, there will be between 500 and 1200 yen.

Osamu Dazai

Born in the region, the sixth son of a wealthy landowner and politician, Dazai was a novelist who emerged at the end of World War II as the literary voice of his time. He was often inspired by his past for his fictions. Although the dominant atmosphere of much of his writing is dark, he was also famous for his humour, which sometimes comes close to farce.

Guided tours offer a walk in places linked to Osamu Dazai, born in Kanagi district. During the walk, the participants will discover his work, Omoide (Memories), and essays he wrote when he was at Meiji Higher Elementary School.

Shayokan

Shayokan is a building with an irimoya-style roof built by Gen的emon Tsushima (the father of Osamu Dazai), an important landowner during the Meiji period. The building was completed in June 1907. The entire structure, including the rice attic, was made of Japanese cypress wood. Including adjoining buildings and a Japanese garden with ponds, the site is huge. After the Tsushima family abandoned the building after the war, the building became Shayokan Inn in 1950. The former government of Kanagi-machi Township (later merged with Goshogawara) purchased the structure in March 1996, restored the interior of the hostel and reopened the place as a museum.

Room Tsugaru Shamisen

Kanagi-machi in the city of Goshogawara is the birthplace of the Shamisen Tsugaru (three string musical instrument). The Tsugaru Shamisen Hall features an exhibition hall presenting the history of the Tsugaru Shamisen as well as local folk songs and performing arts accompanied by the Tsugaru Shamisen. Visitors can attend Tsugaru shamisen shows and try to play the instrument. Entry costs 600 yen.
